Arrival . at Orca City
depthCORE pack Archae

I have no idea what archae is actually, and I thought it was about architectural stuff at first and so I got this idea. Anyway here you go. Modeled and rendered in 3DS Max without using anything called Geeble. I modeled everything from nothing.

Orca City is one of the hidden habits in the spacescape. While the empire is preparing the war (Imperial), this group of people lives in the fog, constructing giant columns of boxes. They have also the technology to generate energy in the air (like Recticore) but in an unstable way. Therefore they need to construct the settlements around the power source. Every day these starships transfer people and goods from one column to another, and only hope to be undisturbed by other races...

UPDATED . Thanks so much for the DD! And I also "weakened" the watermark. :) Thanks all the support!

Arrival by Vincent Lai of DepthCore fame, is a perfect example of why these guys are carving out such a huge name for themselves in the world of digital art. Hulking sci-fi imagery combined with great composition sets this apart from the pack.

You mean modeling? It takes several days to get things right. I drafted this on paper for a week too. :)

Thanks.

amazing composition here m8.
great colors. love the modeling job you did.
very kewl render lookin like some type of space station.
very great ideas
the light kicks ass!
It is very sad that ppl. rip work and you have to place those bloody watermarks all over ur work just to stop those bastard rippers from doing such things. I bet this looks even more magnificent w/out those watermarks.
Great job m8 :)

I like the colors and the overall feeling of the piece, but I'm disappointed at the fact that the first column of boxes is exactly identical (but flipped) to the one next to it. It would have been muuuuch better if both were unique..
Still good piece.

I like this one because it has very organic feeling, not just because of colors/light but because of its structure. If you zoom out, you can see it as a ghost-face or bug-face, or as a microscopic view of cells, pulsing hideous light.

Of course when you zoom in, you can see it is about sci-fi theme, but it still has that strong organic feel - again because of that light, which feel not just alive, but somehow as a parasite - like it is eating the whole thing from inside - or like giant biomechanical rotting fruits - or like an early phase of a nuclear damage... really, really energetic.

Light is really a terrific thing in this piece, besides details.

Excellent work, again. fav!

PS: just one thought - isn't the smaller 'ship' just a bit too blurred - was it rendered like that?

I think it's not blurred, but the ship is small. It looks very okay when I printed it out in full version (20 x 30 inch). Our monitor screens just cannot hold too much LOL

Thanks for the comment!

Despite it's gaining of overwhelming popularity, I'm not really feeling this piece, Vincent. It seems too simple for you, it seems like it doesn't live up to the standards you have set previously, standards that have inspired me so much. The lighting is boring, for lack of a better word, and the 'Greeble' effect (regardless of if you used it or not) doesn't offer much.

Thank you, but I have no standard for myself, and simplicity is always the thing I am trying and heading too. :)
